Ford VIN Check

Known issues, recall history, and what to check before buying a used Ford.

Overview

Ford is one of the best-selling brands globally, offering everything from the Fiesta to the F-150. Used Fords are widely available and generally affordable, but certain models have significant known issues — particularly the PowerShift dual-clutch transmission in Focus/Fiesta and early EcoBoost engines. The F-150 and Ranger are among the most reliable trucks available.

VIN prefix: 1FA/1FT = Ford (US), WF0 = Ford (Germany), VS6 = Ford (Spain)

Common Issues

PowerShift DCT (2011–2019 Focus/Fiesta)

The DPS6 PowerShift dual-clutch transmission is the subject of multiple class-action lawsuits worldwide. Symptoms include shuddering, hesitation, and unexpected loss of drive. Ford extended warranty to 7 years/150,000 km in some markets. Avoid unless replacement clutch and TCM are documented.

EcoBoost 1.0L Coolant Loss (2012–2018)

The award-winning 1.0 EcoBoost 3-cylinder can develop coolant leaks into the cylinder head, causing overheating and engine failure without warning. Ford issued a recall for certain production periods. Check coolant level and look for signs of overheating.

EcoBoost 1.5L Carbon Buildup

Direct injection EcoBoost engines develop intake valve carbon buildup over time, causing rough idle and misfires. Walnut blasting clean: \u20ac300–500. More common after 80,000 km.

Door Latch Recall (2011–2016)

Multiple Ford models (Focus, Fiesta, Fusion, C-Max, Escape) were recalled for door latches that could fail to close properly, allowing doors to open while driving. Over 2.3 million vehicles affected in the US alone. Verify recall completion.

Rust on European Models

European-market Fords, particularly the Mk3/Mk4 Focus and Mondeo, can develop rust around wheel arches, sills, and rear quarter panels earlier than competitors. Inspect thoroughly, especially in northern European climates.

Recall Highlights

Ford has among the highest recall volumes of any manufacturer. Key recalls include the PowerShift transmission campaign, EcoBoost coolant leak recall, door latch failures (2.3M vehicles), Takata airbag replacement, and F-150 seat belt pretensioner recalls. The F-150 alone has accumulated over 40 recall campaigns across recent model years — most are precautionary.

Buying Tips

1.Avoid the 2011–2016 Focus/Fiesta with PowerShift automatic unless you can verify a full clutch pack replacement.
2.On EcoBoost engines, check coolant level cold and look for white residue around the expansion tank.
3.Ford's manual transmissions are generally reliable — consider manual over automatic on Focus/Fiesta.
4.Check the FordPass app for recall status using the VIN before viewing the car.
5.European Fords benefit from Ford's extended dealer network — parts availability is excellent.
