Peugeot VIN Check

Known issues, recall history, and what to check before buying a used Peugeot.

Overview

Peugeot is part of the Stellantis group and shares platforms with Opel and Citroën. The brand has improved dramatically in quality since 2015, with models like the 3008, 308, and 208 winning design and reliability awards. However, the PureTech 3-cylinder petrol engine has a significant timing belt issue that affects millions of vehicles, and buyers must be aware of it.

VIN prefix: VF3 = Peugeot (France), VR3 = Peugeot (newer models)

Common Issues

PureTech 1.2 Timing Belt (2014–2022)

The PureTech 1.2 3-cylinder turbo engine—used in 208, 308, 2008, 3008, and partner brands—has a timing belt that can fail prematurely, sometimes before 50,000 km. Stellantis extended warranty to 10 years/175,000 km. Belt replacement: €600–900. ALWAYS check if belt was replaced.

DPF Issues (BlueHDi diesel)

Peugeot BlueHDi diesel engines use an AdBlue SCR system plus DPF. City driving causes DPF clogging and AdBlue crystallization. Symptoms: warning lights, forced regeneration, limp mode. AdBlue injector replacement: €400–700.

EAT6 Automatic Transmission Hesitation

The Aisin EAT6 6-speed auto in pre-2019 models can exhibit delayed downshifts and hesitation. The newer EAT8 8-speed (2019+) is significantly improved and one of the best automatics in the segment.

i-Cockpit Instrument Cluster

Peugeot's high-mounted instrument cluster (i-Cockpit) is divisive—some drivers find the steering wheel blocks the view. Not a defect, but test drive thoroughly. Digital cluster in post-2020 models is better positioned.

Suspension Noise (3008/5008)

The 3008 and 5008 can develop front suspension knocking around 40,000–60,000 km due to anti-roll bar link wear. Cheap fix (€100–200) but annoying if not addressed.

Recall Highlights

The biggest Peugeot recall is the PureTech timing belt campaign affecting millions of vehicles across Stellantis brands (Peugeot, Citroën, Opel, DS). Other recalls include 308 bonnet catch failures, e-208 charging system faults, and 3008 hybrid battery cooling issues.

Buying Tips

1.PureTech 1.2: ALWAYS verify timing belt status. If no proof of replacement, budget €600–900 immediately.
2.The EAT8 automatic (2019+) is excellent—prefer it over the older EAT6.
3.BlueHDi diesel: check AdBlue system. Ask when the AdBlue injector was last serviced.
4.Post-2015 Peugeots are dramatically more reliable than pre-2015 models. Focus on newer models.
5.Check the i-Cockpit during test drive—visibility varies significantly by driver height.
