Buying a Used Car in Germany

Germany is Europe's largest used car market with 6.5M+ transactions per year. Here's what you need to know.

Why Germany?

Germany is the #1 source of used cars in Europe. German owners maintain vehicles well (TÜV inspections every 2 years are mandatory), and high registration taxes on older vehicles mean many well-maintained cars are sold at competitive prices. The major platforms are mobile.de, AutoScout24, and eBay Kleinanzeigen. Dealers (Händler) offer legal warranty; private sellers (Privat) sell "as is."

TÜV Inspection

The TÜV (Technischer Überwachungsverein) is Germany's periodic vehicle inspection. Every vehicle must pass TÜV every 2 years to remain registered. A vehicle sold with fresh TÜV (recently passed) gives confidence about its mechanical condition. A vehicle with expired TÜV may have hidden issues—budget for inspection costs (€80–150) and potential repairs. TÜV reports include mileage readings, which helps detect odometer fraud.

Common Scams

Odometer fraud (Tachomanipulation)

Despite being illegal (§22b StVG), odometer rollback is common on export vehicles. Always cross-reference mileage with TÜV reports, service book, and physical wear.

"Privat" sellers who are actually dealers

Some commercial traders pose as private sellers to avoid warranty obligations. If someone has multiple cars listed or operates from a commercial area, they may be a disguised dealer.

Accident damage concealment

By law, dealers must disclose known accident damage. However, "unfallfreies Fahrzeug" (accident-free) only means no damage disclosed to the seller. Always inspect paint thickness and panel gaps.

Buying Tips

1.Always request the TÜV report (HU-Bericht) and compare mileage with the ad.
2.Use the Fahrzeugbrief (vehicle registration part II) to verify ownership chain.
3.Dealers must offer 1-year warranty (Gewährleistung) by law — insist on it.
4.For export purchases, get a Kurzzeitkennzeichen (short-term plate) for transit.
5.Run a VIN check before visiting — verify specs match the listing, check recalls.
6.Paint thickness meter costs €30–50 and reveals hidden bodywork instantly.
